The Big Fat HELP and SUPPORT Page: Back to main HELP page
Managing Your Web Hosting Account All the help you need with managing your web hosting account with us. It is best to read all this section to acquaint yourself with all the features of your web hosting account.
01. How do I configure my domain name to point to my new hosting account? (Change Nameservers)Go to the Domain Name Registrar's website that you registered your domain name through, log into your account there and look for a link that says "Change Nameservers" or "Set Nameservers" or "Change DNS" or something similar.
If your domain name is registered at Big Wide Web Shop (formerly URL Freak) log into your account there, then click on Domain Manager from the left menu. Once the page loads, select your domain name by checking the checkbox, then click on the Nameservers icon from the row of icons above.
You will then be given a choice of options. Select: "I host my domains with another provider."
Change the two current Nameservers to the ones below:
ns35.bulkdns.co.uk
ns36.bulkdns.co.uk Then hit OK.
Some registrars may ask for IP addresses too. If so, enter 62.149.36.119 and 62.149.36.219
NOTE: If we have already sent you a welcome email and it shows different nameservers to the ones above, then IGNORE the above settings and use the nameservers in the email. (We have several servers with different nameservers)
Once the Nameservers are changed, it MAY take around 24 hours for the domain name to point to your new Big Fat account. (usually MUCH sooner!)
You will be able to check whether your domain name is pointing correctly by typing your domain name in your browser.
If you see a temporary Big Fat holding page, then the pointing process has been successful and your domain is configured to use with your new hosting account. (of course, the pointing process may take up to 24 hours)
Please be aware that your domain name continues to be registered in your name, with your domain registrar. You are only pointing it, not transferring it. You still have full control of it and you are still liable for its annual registration fee.
If, by any chance, you have not registered your domain yet, (some people think that a domain name is part of a web hosting package, but it is a separate thing) you will need to do so now, then set your nameserver settings after you have registered it.
We recommend Big Wide Web Shop as the best place for you to register a domain name 02. How do I move my existing website to my new web hosting account at Big Fat Web Hosting? This is actually very simple.
- If you haven't done so already, create a folder (call it My Site or something) on your hard drive and download all the files and folders(and databases if any) of your website in their correct order from your OLD web hosting account into it.
- Change the Nameserver settings of your domain name as mentioned in Question 1 above.
- As soon as your domain name is pointing correctly, upload your website onto your web hosting account.
You upload files into the public_html folder.
(Remember to delete the existing index.html file from the public_html folder first before uploading your files.)
- When this is complete, contact your previous web host and cancel your account with them.
03. How do I log into my CPanel Control Panel?Simply type your domain name in your browser, followed by /cpanel/
i.e. http://www.yourdomain.com/cpanel/
Log in when prompted with your Username and Password.
04. How do I edit or upload files and where do I upload them? You upload all files and folders into the public_html directory of your web server.
Remember to delete the existing index.html file that sits in the public_html directory first, which is just a "Big Fat" holding page.
DON'T delete any files, however, if we have installed a website for you!
Don't forget that the front page of your website MUST be called index.html (or index.php if you have a php website)
There are two ways that you can edit or upload files.
- Use an FTP Programme: (sometimes called an FTP Client)
This is the BEST way to upload files.
An FTP (File Transfer Protocol) programme is software that you use to edit or upload files onto your website.
You can find many FTP programmes on the internet, but we recommend WS_FTP which is the best and easiest to use FTP programme ever. Download WS_FTP
- File Manager:
Log into your CPanel Control Panel and click on File Manager.
Here, you will be able to navigate through your folders and upload and edit your files. Please note that File Manager has limitations and it is advised that you use an FTP Programme if you plan on uploading lots of files.
05. How do I create email accounts?
Simply follow the instructions below:
- Log into your CPanel Control Panel.
- Click on Email Accounts.
- Fill in the form to create the email account.
06. How do I read or send emails?Simply follow the instructions below:
- Log in to your CPanel Control Panel.
- Click on Email Accounts.
- Next to your email account, click on More, then on Access Webmail.
- Then click on Webmail.
- You will then be able to read or send emails.
07. Can I forward emails sent to my website to my home email client?Yes, you can forward your website emails to your own home email client such as Outlook Express.
Simply follow the instructions below:
- Log into to your CPanel Control Panel.
- In the Mail section, click on Forwarders.
- Then follow the online instructions.
Any emails sent to your website email addresses (you@yourwebsite.com ) will then also be forwarded to your home email client.
08. Am I able to set up my website email address accounts into Outlook Express?Yes. You'll probably find it easier to send and receive your you@yourwebsite.com website emails from Outlook Express rather than logging into CPanel each time.
To do this, firstly create an email address in CPanel.
Then, in your Outlook Express, click on Tools, then select Accounts.
When the box opens, click on Add > Mail.
Enter your details such as display name of account, email address, etc.
If it asks you what type of account, enter POP3.
It will ask for pop and smtp (incoming out outgoing mail) servers.
On both occasions enter mail.yourwebsite.com (replacing yourwebsite.com with your domain name)
It will then ask for account name and password for logging in.
Enter your new email address in the account name field but replace @ with +
So it will be you+yourwebsite.com (replacing you with your email address name and yourwebsite.com with your domain name)
Then enter your password for that email account in the password field.
There is no need to check the Log On Using Secure Password Authorization box.
Click on Finish to save the settings.
You're not done yet though. In Outlook Express, you then go to Tools > Accounts to select your newly added email account from the list of Internet Accounts and click on Properties.
This brings up the settings box.
In the General tab, change the Mail Account entry (which for some weird reason shows your mail server) to the name of your email address. e.g. Support Email.
In the Servers tab, check the My Server Requires Authentication checkbox and click on Settings.
When the box opens, make sure the Use The Same Settings As My Incoming Mail Server option is selected.
OK it all and Apply to save the changes.
It should then all be set up.
Try testing it by sending an email from Outlook to your new website email address and see if it falls into your Outlook inbox.
If you want to make changes at any time to the email account in Outlook Express, click on Tools > Accounts > select the account and click on Properties.
If you find that some of your emails are not getting to the recipients, my guess is that your recipients have Hotmail, MSN, Yahoo or BT email accounts.
There is currently a big problem with Microsoft's and Yahoo's new spam software that doesn't work and basically treats ANY email sent from a website email account
as spam and discards it without the customer knowing. The stupid software doesn't even send you an undelivered notice, so you will be unaware that the customer hasn't received your email.
This has hit many online businesses hard, but there IS a way round it.
In Outlook Express, click on Tools > Accounts > select the account and click on Properties.
Click on the Servers tab.
Change your SMTP (Outgoing mail) server to the same server as your home email account in Outlook Express.
Then click on the Settings button.
Change the selection to Log On Using and enter your home email account login details.
You may check the Save Password checkbox if you wish, but there's no need to check the Log On Using Secure Password Authentication checkbox.
OK it all and Apply to save all settings.
Your outgoing website emails will now be sent out by your home email address server, which should get through their silly spam software.
If you have an email client other than Outlook Express, the above instructions may differ slightly. 09. Why are my emails not being delivered to some customers?REASON ONE:
If you are running a webscript such as an ecommerce store, ebook store or whatever, you MUST set your contact email address for the website as one of your WEBSITE email accounts. (i.e. you@yourwebsite.com)
DON'T use your home email or a free email account as your contact email.
As most webscripts use your web hosting mailserver as email transport, our servers may reject emails send through our system that are sent via ISP or free emails, other than your website email accounts.
REASON TWO: If you find that some of your emails you send from your website are not getting to the recipients, my guess is that your recipients have Hotmail, MSN, Yahoo or BT email accounts.
There is currently a big problem with Microsoft's and Yahoo's new spam software that doesn't work and basically treats a lot of email sent from a website email account
as spam and discards it without the customer knowing. The stupid software doesn't even send you an undelivered notice, so you will be unaware that the customer hasn't received your email.
We contacted Microsoft and Yahoo about this problem, but they disregarded us with a dismissive wave by suggesting: "If emails don't get delivered by your client's website emails, then get them to send emails from their home email address."
So I replied with: "If my clients have mail coming to their business websites, it's going to look really unprofessional if they reply using a home email address."
That's when I gave up talking to them! What complete claptrap!
The only way round this is to set up all your website email accounts in your Outlook Express and use your ISP as an outgoing mailserver.
For instructions, please read all of the "Am I able to set up my website email address accounts into Outlook Express?" question in this FAQ. (No.8) 10. How do I backup my entire website?Don't use the CPanel Backup system as it's rubbish! Here's the BEST way of backing up your website:
Create a folder on your computer and call it My Site or something like that.
Using an FTP programme download ALL your website files and folders in their correct order into that folder on your computer.
You now have a backup copy of your website.
Remember to also backup any subsequent changes.
If you have a database, you are advised to regularly back that up too.
To do this:
Log into your CPanel Control Panel and click on the My SQL Databases icon.
When the page loads, scroll down to the bottom and click on the PHP My Admin link to enter the database area.
Select your database from the left column, then click on Export from the top navigation.
Scroll down and check the Save As File checkbox and hit Go.
You will then be prompted to save the database file to your hard drive.
It is best to download it to the same folder as your website files on your computer.
Remember, you are responsible for keeping a regular backup of your website. 11. Where do I go to install or manage a database?Log into your CPanel Control Panel and click on My SQL Databases.
Create a name for your database. (one word)
Your full database name will then be created out of your web hosting username, followed by ann underscore and your db chosen name. e.g. username_databasename
If you like, you can create a username and password for your database, but it is optional.
If you create a database username and password, make sure that, afterwards, you "Add User" to the database.
Next, click on Home in the top left corner to take you back to the main CPanel, then click on PHP My Admin, which will take you to a web-based database management area where you can then install your database. To install your database, select the relevant database name from the list on the left, (there will only be one there if this is your first database) by clicking on it or selecting it from a select dropbox.
A top navigation bar will appear. From that navigation bar, click on Import. Use the Browse tool to locate your database file on the hard drive of your computer, select latin1 from the Character Set dropbox below it, then click on Upload. Your database will then be automatically uploaded and installed, bearing in mind that the time it takes to install will depend on the database size and your internet connection speed.
After you have installed the database, you will then need to enter the database details into the configuration file of your webscript or turnkey website, as per its installation instructions.
In your webscript's config file, where it asks for database name, you need to enter your web hosting username, followed by an undercore and the name you called your database.
e.g. username_databasename
Where it asks for username and password in the config file, you enter the database username and password that you created earlier.
If you didn't create a database username and password for your database, simply enter your web hosting account username and password. 12. How do I password protect a directory on my website?Log into your CPanel Control Panel and click on Password Protect Directories. Enter public_html by clicking on the public_html folder icon.
Then navigate through the directory tree by clicking on the folder icons until you locate the directory (folder) you wish to protect.
Select the chosen directory by clicking on its clickable NAME. (NOT the folder icon)
When the page loads, you then assign a username and password of your choice, then click on Add/Modify User. After that, go back and check the checkbox that says "Password protect this directory" (and name it if you like) then click on Save.
13. Where do I go to view website statistics? Log into your CPanel Control Panel and scroll down to the Logs section. You will then be presented with various web statistics programmes. Webalizer is the best.
14. I've almost used up my allocated 500MB of webspace. Can I get more webspace?
Unfortunately not. We ONLY supply 500MB web hosting plans and cannot add more webspace to your account. We allocate 500MB of webspace to all our customers and only allocate a certain amount of accounts per server, thus enabling your websites to run without problems.
The only option is, once your hosting term with us expires, go to somewhere like Big Wide Web Shop for unlimited web hosting
However, we're sorry but, as per our terms and conditions, if you leave us to go to elsewhere before your term with us expires, we cannot offer any refunds on the remaining term.
15. My PayPal web hosting subscription has been cancelled! I didn't cancel it. Why is this?Unfortunately, PayPal automatically cancel subscriptions if you change your source of funds, which can include adding a new credit card. It can also be cancelled if you change an associated email address or if there are insufficient funds in your PayPal account. This is very annoying, but it is PayPal's policy.
If this happens to you, it is best to act as quickly as possible. All we get is an email from PayPal, stating that a web hosting subscription has been cancelled, so we often naturally assume that you have cancelled the web hosting account. We usually email you when a web hosting subscription is cancelled to verify whether it was either PayPal or you that cancelled it. If we hear nothing back within a week, we assume that you have cancelled your web hosting and the account is suspended. If we still hear nothing, the account will be deleted.
If PayPal does cancel your subscription in this way, simply contact us as soon as possible and we will show you how to reactivate your web hosting subscription. 16. How do I change my web hosting subscription from monthly to annually? (or vice versa)To do this, in the first instance, log into PayPal and CANCEL your current PayPal web hosting subscription with us.
You then go to our Reactivation Page , choose your preferred plan (monthly, annual or 6-monthly), click on the relevant buy button and purchase via PayPal. That's all you need to do.
17. Can I have more that one domain/website associated to my account?Sorry. No, we cannot provide an add-on domain / multiple website service. You can only have one domain name / website per account.
18. What material or programmes am I NOT permitted to use on my website? Our web hosting package may be used for lawful purposes only.
You may NOT use our services for ANY illegal activity.
Transmission, storage, or presentation of any information, data or material in violation of any United Kingdom, or any International laws is prohibited.

Your account will be suspended if you break these conditions.

- Formmail.php. Use the secure formmail.cgi which we have already installed on the server.
- MIRC Chat programmes, IRC or IRC bots.
- Bulk email and spam programmes.
- Any script/programme that will affect our servers.
19. My website is not showing up! (Page Cannot Be Displayed)Firstly, check that it is not your internet connection.
If it is your website that is not showing up, don't panic. On VERY rare occasions, our servers may go down temporarily. This could be due to a fault being fixed or the server has been momentarily shut down to enable a server upgrade. This happens very rarely and only usually lasts for a few minutes at the most. 20. Where do I find my CPanel Control Panel Instruction Manual and Video Tutorials? To consult your CPanel Online Instruction Manual that covers every aspect of managing your web hosting account, log into your CPanel Control Panel, scroll down and look at the bottom of the page. Click on the link that says Documentation.
Alternatively, we provide you with a Getting Started Wizard and free Video Tutorials in CPanel. 21. Why has my web hosting account been suspended? The following few are the main reasons why an account would be suspended. Of course, there could be other reasons as we hold the right to suspend accounts for any reason at our discretion. The usual reasons for an account suspension are:
a) NON PAYMENT: Always make sure that there is enough funds in your PayPal account or your credit card to cover your monthly or annual web hosting subscription. PayPal attempts to take your subscription payment three times. (within a 7 day period) On the third unsuccessul time, PayPal automatically cancels your subscription. If PayPal cancels your subscription in this way, we will suspend your account.
You will then need to contact us as soon as possible and we will show you how to reactivate your subscription. If we do not hear from users whose accounts have been suspended within a reasonable amount of time, then we will have no choice but to delete the account. Account deletions are not reversable.
b) PAYPAL SUBSCRIPTION CANCELLATION: PayPal automatically cancel subscriptions if you change your source of funds, which can include adding a new credit card.
It can also be cancelled if you change an associated email address or if there are insufficient funds in your PayPal account.
This is very annoying, but it is PayPal's policy.
If this happens to you, it is best to act as quickly as possible and contact us
All we get is an email from PayPal, stating that a web hosting subscription has been cancelled, so we naturally assume that you have cancelled the web hosting account.
We will usually email you when a web hosting subscription is cancelled to verify whether it was either PayPal or you that cancelled it. If we hear nothing back within a week, we assume that you have cancelled your web hosting and the account is suspended. If we still hear nothing, the account is deleted. Account deletions are not reversable.
If you wish to reactivate your subscription and get your website back online, simply contact us as soon as possible and we will help you. c) EXCESSIVE SPAMMING / UNSOLICITED EMAILING:
Your web hosting account CANNOT be used to send excessive unsolicited emails (SPAM) and you CANNOT spam messageboards and newsgroups with links to your website. In such a case, it is NOT US who has suspended your account. It is the company who we lease our servers from. This is beyond our control, but contact us and we will try to rectify the issue.
d) EXCEEDING YOUR ALLOCATED BANDWIDTH:
You get 20 Gigabytes of Bandwidth per month, which is more than sufficient for even a high traffic website.
If you exceed your bandwidth limit, your account is automatically suspended until the second day of the next month. In such a case, it is NOT US who has suspended your account. It is the company who we lease our servers from. This is beyond our control, but contact us and we will try to rectify the issue.
e) USING SCRIPTS/PROGRAMMES HARMFUL TO OUR SERVERS:
We do not allow the use of scripts or programmes on your website that can harm our servers. These are mostly chat, spam and similar programmes, but can also be scripts/programmes that drain our CPU and/or bandwidth. In most cases, it is NOT US who has suspended your account. It is the company who we lease our servers from. This is beyond our control, but contact us and we will rectify the issue.
f) AN ATTACK ON THE SERVER:
No webscripts are 100% secure and (although this is very rare) have been known to be exploited by hackers who have gained access onto a web hosting account. If a hacker is detected, the account is temporarily suspended to prevent any damage. In most cases, it is NOT US who has suspended your account. It is the company who we lease our servers from. This is beyond our control, but contact us and we will rectify the issue. 22. I'd like to cancel my web hosting. How do I do that?To cancel, simply contact us , letting us know that you wish to cancel your web hosting with us. You DO NOT need to give us any notice and DO NOT need to give us a reason why. After that, log into your PayPal account, locate your subscription with us and cancel it. 23. My question is not displayed here!Back to main HELP page
